So This Is... December.
Happy Holidays, All! I know, I know. I always say I’m going to do these more often and then time seems to slip away from me. I can’t tell you how many times I started this post since September only to delete everything I typed and start over.
Since I last wrote Anna turned 8 and finished her fall softball season. Krissy was the head coach (I helped a little), and I gotta say I’m so proud of them both. Sophie turns 2 in a couple of days, and her personality is really starting to shine.
This past year has really been a rollercoaster for us at home. But at the risk of jinxing myself, I will say though that I feel we’ve turned (or at least are turning) a corner. I suddenly feel like my head isn’t spinning around in circles and I’m ready to focus on accomplishing things. It’s like when President Bartlet says, “What’s next?” And I know it’s the holidays so things slow down, but I’m ready for January. I want to make plans.
Plans
Speaking of plans, here’s a couple of thoughts I’ve had. The first is I want to be a better advocate for my music and to take myself more seriously. I get so easily discouraged when venues don’t respond or when people don’t get excited about my songs. I take those “cues” to mean that I’m not good enough. But I know that’s not true. I am a great singer/songwriter and I am good enough. I’ll say it again. I am a great Singer/Songwriter and I AM good enough.
Second, I would like to put out some new, original music. The last bit of original music I released was in 2019 (Pre-Covid!), and it was recorded in a car. Don’t get me wrong, I loved that aesthetic; but I want to make something more polished. I’ve been writing new songs, and I want to give them a home.
Third, I want to get back to my theatre roots. I don’t know if I ever mentioned it, but back in 2012 I wrote a musical called The Levy Debate, and it was a finalist for “The Alec Baldwin Fellowship at The Singers Forum”. The material in the musical is now pretty dated, and the Forum has since closed, but I have ideas for something new and I’d like to see them through.
Recent Highlights
The Bowie tribute was phenomenal. A great turnout with a killer band and some fabulous vocalists (including Allison Guinn who you may recognize as KT from “Only Murders in the Building”). I sang “TVC15” and “Ziggy Stardust” which is available on our TikTok and IG.
Rainbow Rodeo was a blast as usual. Rachel Cholst is such a treasure to the Queer Country community and just to musicians in general. Being asked by her to play is an honor and a privilege.
Christian & Cole played the Brooklyn Folk Festival in November and were kind enough to add one of my newest tunes, “The Southern State Waltz” to their setlist.
Finally, Christian and I played Leah Tash’s Songwriter Soiree at Pete’s Candy Store two weeks ago and boy did we have fun! We were breathing life into these new songs in our Nudie Suits (look it up) and it was a blast.
OK, it’s late and I’ve been rambling. If you made it to the end, Thank you. If you’ve been listening to our music, Thank you. I love you all, have a great night.
See you soon,
Robert
