Paternity Leave

Baby Sophie!

We welcomed Baby Sophie into the world back in December.

We are now 5 in the house and couldn’t be happier (or more tired). Tegris and Anna have been enjoying their new baby sister as we’ve been managing our school and work schedules. The first two months were pretty much a blur of holidays and sleepless nights, but the baby smiles have certainly made them easier. It hasn’t been all good news though.

About a week after Sophie was born, my (Robert’s) father passed away. Suffice to say, our relationship was complicated. As a truck driver he was seldom present at home, and after separating from my mother in ‘96 any interaction with him was few and far between. I try not to cast judgment since we all have our own experiences and choices to make in life. I had often assumed a reconciliation would occur somewhere down the road, but that wasn’t to be.

My Way In Manila

In more uplifting news, we finally finished mastering the new EP! Our pal Jason Borisoff at Conveyor was able to take our home recordings and put his magic spin on them. We’re so excited because now we can take the next steps towards putting it out. We’re looking at a release date in the Summer with a first single coming out in the next few weeks.

This collaborative EP is rooted in the social phenomenon known as the “My Way Killings” and incorporates tracks written and performed by friends including: Niall Connolly, Cole Quest Rotante, Mike Robinson, Chris Q. Murphy, Karen Dahlstrom, Sean McCabe, Craig Kierce, E. W. Harris and many more.

FAWM & NPR Tiny Desk Contest

I took part in my 2nd FAWM (February Album Writing Month) this year, but only managed to write one song. I also used that song to submit to my first NPR Tiny Desk Contest. To no one’s surprise the song is about my father. You can hear the two different versions at the links below:

“Dutch” on Soundcloud for FAWM

“Dutch” on YouTube for NPR Tiny Desk

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

I believe that brings us up to speed. I started my paternity leave at the beginning of March and I’m excited to see what this year has in store. Stay tuned for updates!

Sincerely,

Robert
